ASBESTOS LITIGATION
Since the early 1960s Francis Hanna & Co has been acting on behalf of victims of asbestos related diseases in Northern Ireland.
Because of our long standing relationship with the Trade Union movement we have always been one of the leading firms dealing with these specialist industrial diseases. Our experience is next to none in this area. The partner who heads our asbestos department, Martin Hanna, is the third generation of his family to prosecute these types of cases. Martin has dealt with every possible asbestos related case and indeed secured the highest ever award in the courts in Northern Ireland for the widow of a man who died of a malignant mesothelioma.
A large volume of these tragic cases in Northern Ireland involve Harland and Wolff Plc as asbestos was so widely used in the ship building industry. There are however many other industries which have used this dreadful substance. We have prosecuted claims on behalf of individuals who have been exposed to asbestos in the building industry, in the power stations and a large number of factories and work premises throughout Northern Ireland.
Because the time between exposure to asbestos and the development of symptoms is frequently up to 40 years and beyond, sadly still to this day people are being diagnosed by doctors with asbestos related conditions which include:-
- Unilateral Diffuse Pleural thickening
- Asbestosis
- Mesothelioma
- Lung cancer with asbestosis
All of these conditions are compensatable if they can be attributed to a former period of employment.
In the occasional cases where it is not possible to claim against former employers or their insurers, eligible dependants or sufferers from certain conditions may be eligible to submit claims to the government under the provisions of The Mesothelioma, etc Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.
