Nursing home residents and the elderly are amongst our most vulnerable citizens. Whilst the vast majority of nursing homes in Northern Ireland are reputable establishments staffed by caring, properly trained employees, cases of elder abuse and nursing home neglect do occur. Critical errors and omissions, neglect and abuse can leave the victim with physical and emotional injuries. ELDER FINANCIAL ABUSE

The abuse of the elderly does not just involve physical or sexual abuse. It is a sad reality that elderly people can also be victims of financial abuse, such as the unauthorised accessing of money from accounts, or psychological abuse, such as bullying or neglect.

Many people diagnosed with dementia will need either an application to the Office of Care and Protection to become a patient or to appoint a family member or friend to become an attorney. In some cases it then becomes identified that these people have become subject to family members acting without the legal appointment and have had property or money transferred out of accounts which is in many cases a criminal offence. These cases then become subject to litigation at the Court of Protection as a vulnerable adult and can also involve the Official Solicitor.
